ג'ונתן טסיני תבע את אריאנה האפינגטון על שאינה משלמת לאלפי הבלוגרים הכותבים אצלה. פניתי אליו וביקשתי שיענה על כמה שאלות שהטרידו אותי אחרי שקראתי על התביעה שלו. כל אחד מאיתנו בחר להיצמד לשפה בה הוא מרגיש בטוח יותר, וזו התוצאה.

מה אתה אומר על דברי דובר האפינגטון פוסט לגרדיאן, ש"התביעה חסרת בסיס כי הבלוגרים משתמשים בפלטפורמה של האתר בדיוק כמו קבוצות בלוגרים לא משולמות אחרות ברחבי הרשת, על מנת שעבודתם תיחשף לכמה שיותר קוראים. מאותה סיבה אנשים משתתפים גם בתוכניות אירוח: לקדם את עצמם ואת רעיונותיהם. הבלוגרים בהאפינגטון פוסט יכולים לפרסם את הפוסטים שלהם בכל מקום ואתר".

I’m shocked, shocked (can you feel the sarcasm?) that Arianna Huffington does not believe there is a basis for the lawsuit. The suit is very clear – we are arguing “unjust enrichment” and deceptive business practices. Huffington the hypocrite, who runs around building a “brand” based on her concern for the middle class, basically tells the people who made her rich (again) “go to hell”. We’ll let a judge decide whether we have a legal case on behalf of 9,000 bloggers.

משהו התחדש מאז שהיגשת את התביעה?

Not much. The legal case takes times. BUT…lots of people have been woken up and encouraged by the case. I said to our lawyers from the beginning that the legal case is just one route to justice – we have to use the case to organize a big campaign.

ניסית לפנות לאריאנה האפינגטון ישירות? אתם מכירים?

No, because she had made it clear in previous statements responding to other complaints and an organizing campaign by two unions that she had no interest in sharing a dime with the bloggers. She basically said, go ahead and strike. She is the new media Marie Antoinette: “Let them eat megabytes”

הגב על הטענה שאתם בעצם מרוויחים מזה – הכרה, טראפיק, הצעות עבודה, ושאת כל זה נותנת לכם הפלטפורמה?

This is nothing new as I have written. Going back to the pen and quill days publishers want to rob from creative people – they prey on the fear of creative people, who want their work seen. And because of that fear creators are bullied into working for pennies or for free.

עם יד על הלב: היה ולא היה נמכר האתר ל-AOL, הייתם ממשיכים לכתוב תמורת אפס דולרים?

Well, if you are asking about me, it’s complicated. One, I had long thought something here is not right and had talked to people about starting a campaign – the AOL sale just gave it energy. Second, the site has become so disorganized and in some way not effective for me personally.

I post there and post elsewhere very similar pieces. But I know the difference between a community site like Daily Kos versus the Huffington Post which is a commercial operations.

AOL would never have bought the site and paid the money without the content of the thousands of bloggers. I think that is a fact.

ליסה גולדמן נסעה למצרים בזכות קוראיה. מה אתה אומר על המודל הזה? גם אני יצרתי לעצמי פורמט שבו הקוראים משלמים לי ישירות.

It can work. OK. In the old print days, people used to raise money like that or get grants to do journalism. But that is very different than a commercial site like HP.

אתה רואה את עצמך כמנהיג פועלים?

I guess I’d say I see myself as a labor activist. That’s what I have done for 20 plus years. And I was also an elected leader from 1990-2003 when I was president of the National Writers Union.

מה מצב ההיענות של הבלוגרים הכותבים לה"פ לפנייתך?

Good. There are supporters and some people who are critical too. It’s part of the terrain. But we’ve gotten a flood of people coming our way-most want to remain anonymous because they obviously fear being black-listed

איך התקשורת מתייחסת אליך (מבחינת הסיפור הזה)?

I haven’t seen everything so my answer is based on what I have read. The reporting side has been pretty straightforward and interested because of the visibility of the suit. Also, you may know I already won a big case some years ago so reporters remember that, too.
Some of the opinion stuff has been critical but mostly that’s been on the analysis of whether the case can be won – and I just leave that to a judge. When I sued in 1993 in the other case, it was a similar vibe – you can’t win etc…well, you just have to have patience.

Not really. Anyone who read her response saw a person who is bitter, unhinged, crazy and vindictive. It speaks for itself.

עקבת אחר ההתנהלות בין ניו יורק טיימס, וושינגטון פוסט ומאמר התיקון של גולדסטון?

I think the recent recanting by Goldstone himself does not change, in my opinion, the basic fact that there was, and is, a major difference in power and destructive force between Israel and Hamas. I am against violence against civilians. Period. But, look at the massive destruction and death caused in Gaza. It was horrendous. I don’t think individual Israeli soldiers go out and say, “oh, let’s see if I can kill a civilian”. It is the obvious end result of a massive amount of force and military power brought down on a civilian area. However you look at the specifics of the Goldstone report – and the rest of the committee has not changed its opinion – it can’t be seen in abstraction and separate from the longer term crisis

מה היחסים שלך עם ישראל והתקשורת שלה? היית פה בליל הסדר? כמה פעמים בשנה אתה מגיע? יש לך דעה על התקשורת המקומית? בקיא בה?

Now you make me feel guilty. I don’t get there as much as I want to. I have a brother and sister there, two nephews, a step mother, cousins (in Beit Zera where I spent a lot of time when I lived in Israel in the 1970s). Actually, there are days when I think – I should just move back and work on the peace process… that was something I cared a lot about and still do (I think Bibi is a *** and I can’t believe he is prime minister again, and Liberman – what a racist…maybe he’ll go to jail, the ***)…but my life is here and if I was younger…
